Place of Mercy and Hope is a South African Non-Profit Company, registered Non-Profit Organisation, and Public Benefit Organisation based in the Sundays River Valley, Eastern Cape. Established in the Valencia Settlement, Addo, the organisation was created to respond to deep, structural poverty through an integrated model of early childhood education, nutrition, and basic health care. What began in a single forty-foot container without running water or electricity has developed into the largest Early Childhood Development (ECD) centre in the region, serving hundreds of vulnerable children and families each year.

At the core of Place of Mercy and Hope’s work is early childhood education. The centre provides structured, age-appropriate ECD programmes for infants through to pre-primary learners, supported by trained local educators. Daily meals are provided to every child, addressing food insecurity while enabling continuous health monitoring. Many children rely on the centre for their only reliable meal of the day, making nutrition a foundational component of educational success.

Health care forms the third pillar of the organisation’s model. Place of Mercy and Hope operates an on-site basic health clinic supported by trained home-based carers, a part-time medical doctor, and a registered nurse. Services include first-line health care, trauma support, HIV and TB follow-up, maternal care, and transport assistance to hospitals where required. This integrated approach reduces pressure on under-resourced public clinics and ensures continuity of care for the most vulnerable.

Place of Mercy and Hope also operates Lwazi Educare, a community-based ECD centre in the Dunbrody Settlement. Lwazi Educare functions under the governance and operational oversight of Place of Mercy and Hope, extending its education and nutrition model to additional high-need communities. This decentralised delivery structure allows the organisation to scale impact while maintaining consistent standards, financial oversight, and programme quality.

Beyond early childhood services, Place of Mercy and Hope runs soup kitchens, food-parcel distribution programmes, adult education initiatives, and community support projects, including assistance with identity documents, birth certificates, and access to social grants. The organisation prioritises local employment, skills development, and partnerships with corporate donors, government departments, and international volunteers to ensure long-term sustainability and accountability.

Place of Mercy and Hope is governed by an experienced board and operates with a strong emphasis on transparency, compliance, and measurable impact. Its work reflects a holistic, dignity-centred approach to community development—addressing immediate need while building the foundations for long-term social and economic resilience in the Sundays River Valley.
