Hoedspruit Elephant Rehabilitation and Development (HERD)

Every elephant needs a herd. As a species, their strong family bonds and delicate social dynamics are integral to their well-being and survival. Because of this, orphaned elephant calves have a slim chance of survival in the wild. HERD’s elephant orphanage in South Africa gives them a fighting chance by stepping in as their family and protectors when they need it most. You can help us give them a second chance at life.

Giving Orphaned Elephants a Fighting Chance HERD (Hoedspruit Elephant Rehabilitation and Development) was founded in 2019 as South Africa’s first dedicated elephant orphanage. It was born from necessity, a growing number of calves were left orphaned and vulnerable, in urgent need of specialised care and, most importantly, a herd that would welcome them as family. That family is the Jabulani herd. Today, 16 elephants call it home. Eleven of them are orphans who were rescued, nurtured, and given a second chance at life. Five were born into the herd over the past decade, proof of the strong bonds and generational continuity this unique family has created. Back in 2004, Jabulani Safari Lodge was built with one purpose: to sustain and support the rescued herd. Tourism helped fund their care and management. In 2021, the Jabulani herd, HERD Orphanage, and HERD Homestead came together under the umbrella of the HERD Trust, a registered Public Benefit Organisation. This structure allows for wider public support, ensuring the long-term well-being of the elephants entrusted to our care. Making a Difference At HERD, we know conservation extends beyond the fence line. That’s why we are active in our local communities, sharing knowledge, creating opportunities, and empowering those who live closest to Africa’s elephants. Education and development is vital in building a future where elephants and people thrive together. We are equally committed to our global community. Through digital storytelling, live updates, and online platforms, we connect people around the world to the daily lives of elephants. By engaging audiences near and far, we inspire awareness, empathy, and action for the survival of this iconic species. Our Human Herd Behind every calf’s recovery is a team of dedicated carers, the “human herd.” These men and women work tirelessly, day and night, to give each elephant the nurturing, companionship, and protection they need. Their loyalty and expertise form the backbone of our mission. They don’t just raise elephants, they raise hope.
