About
Our story started in 2000 when we rescued a herd of 8 horses from “Death Hill” just outside Mamre, near Atlantis in the Western Cape.
Dassenberg Rescue Centre is situated 40 km north of Cape Town near Atlantis. Atlantis is a low-income community, of which 50% of households have a monthly income of R3200 or less.
Dassenberg Rescue Centre is a pro-life sanctuary for abused, neglected and abandoned horses and dogs, where 80% of the rescued animals come from Atlantis and the surrounding areas; Chatsworth, Mamre, Kalbaskraal and beyond.
To date, we have rescued more than 260 horses and 750 dogs.
Our main purpose is to rescue, rehabilitate and re-home horses and dogs.
Mission Statement
To give hope, love and dignity to neglected, abandoned and abused domestic animals and to improve the lives of vulnerable people through healing, care and education.
Vision Statement
To create a world where people and animals can live together in harmony and with dignity.
Our “With Heart and Soul for Children and Animals" Programme offers individuals and groups a safe place where interactive, animal-assisted activities facilitate opportunities for self-discovery, personal, social and leadership skills development, or help address mental health challenges.
The Outreach Programme provides educational information, basic medical support and general care and advice to owners in neighbouring communities, to help them become better pet owners.
We also have a Volunteer Programme where people of all ages are invited to give back, interact with our animals and make a difference.
From a single rescue on Death Hill to a sanctuary of hope today, we remain dedicated to rewriting the stories of vulnerable animals and the people who love them.
