Environmental Conservation
The Cape Parrot Project (CPP) is the Wild Bird Trust’s flagship conservation initiative dedicated to saving the endangered Cape Parrot, a species found only in South Africa. With fewer than 2,000 individuals remaining in the wild, the Cape Parrot faces growing threats from habitat loss, forest degradation, disease, and climate change. CPP works to secure the species’ future by protecting and restoring the indigenous forests it depends on, while strengthening the connection between people and nature. Our work focuses on three core areas: research and monitoring, habitat restoration, and community engagement. Through long-term scientific research, we track population trends and health. Habitat restoration includes planting indigenous trees, managing invasive species, and protecting critical forest corridors. Community programmes empower local people to become active custodians of South Africa’s natural heritage. By combining science, restoration, and community-driven conservation, the Cape Parrot Project is working to ensure a thriving future for both the Cape Parrot and the forests it calls home.

How the Public Can Help

Donate
Fundraise
Every action counts when it comes to protecting South Africa’s only endemic parrot and our natural heritage. Here’s how you can help:
  • Field equipment for our teams: rain suits, gear, and tools to work safely and effectively in the forests.
  • Hiking shoes for kids: to support community and education camps, giving the next generation a hands-on connection to nature.
  • Educational resources: materials and kits that inspire young people to become conservation champions.
  • Support for conservation programs: funding that allows us to reach more communities and safeguard Cape Parrot habitats.
Your support ensures our teams can work safely, our children can explore and learn, and the Cape Parrot’s forests thrive for generations to come.
