The Empathologist Foundation is a South Africa organisation driven by a profound commitment to enhancing the well-being of individuals who find themselves in difficult parenthood situations, with a special focus on women that have gone through the process of placing their children up for adoption.
The story of the Empathologist starts with one adoption; with two hopeful parents, a child, and a woman facing a desperate set of circumstances. Those two hopeful parents are the founders of The Empathologist, one Spanish and one South African, and it was their choice to adopt that gave them a personal and profound insight into the story behind each adoption.
At the time of adoption, the overwhelming feelings of joy and excitement were mixed with deep sadness and sorrow as they heard the background information of the biological mother, realizing their joy had become the sadness of someone else. It was on that day that they decided to start the foundation. They could not leave their child's biological mother behind, nor the many others who are left without support, forging a hard path alone.
Since then, this choice has rippled outward to reach more than 47 invidivuals, who's lives and those of their families are all now headed in a new, empowered and hopeful direction.
The Empathologist Foundation operates in and around Cape Town. At the core of their mission lies the belief in providing individualized support and empowerment to those women who have faced life-altering choices or are navigating the repercussions of the actions of others - grandmothers, single mothers, foster parents, family carers and others.
They work closely with their beneficiaries to rediscover their sense of self, renewing their resilience and confidence. Together, they carve out the most necessary first step - and support them in taking it. However that looks for each individual, whichever path they choose, they stand beside them while building a plan for education, employment, or whatever dream they may have to become a reality.
Their core programmes focus on skills development and employability, offering training workshops in areas such as basic computer literacy, hospitality, retail and small business development. They assist with job readiness and job search support, including CV creation, interview preparation, and placement referrals.
They also provide mental health support through counselling services, trauma- informed care, and group sessions that promote emotional healing and resilience.
Recognising that childcare is a key barrier to employment, they offer creche support for mothers actively seeking work or attending training.
In urgent cases, they assist with safe accommodation, providing temporary shelter or partnering with local organisations to build Wendy houses for mothers in need of stable housing or support rental payments.
Among their projects are Thrift&Thrive, a retail training centre; the establishment of the crèche ¨The Voice of an Angel¨ in Delft, Cape Town; and a development initiative in Zimbabwe, where the Foundation facilitated the reunification of a mother with her children and provided the resources to build a family home and chicken coop, creating both stability and a sustainable livelihood.
