The Baby Home – Durban North

The Baby Home, a project of The Peace Agency, is a safe haven where abandoned babies are met with safety, warmth and love — often for the very first time. It was founded by Jo and Bjorn Teunissen, both educators by profession, whose passion for children and personal journey into adoption inspired them to create a home where every baby is known, cherished and deeply loved. Our vision is simple yet powerful: a world where every child grows up surrounded by love, stability and belonging. Our mission is to provide a nurturing, family-style home for babies who have been abandoned, abused or placed into temporary care, while working towards reunification or permanent adoption whenever possible. We care for up to six babies at a time, keeping our numbers small so that each child receives individual attention, consistency and the emotional security they need to heal and thrive. We are not an institution; we are a home. What truly sets The Baby Home apart is the heart behind it. Babies arrive in our care from incredibly sad and traumatic circumstances, and from their first day with us, they are wrapped in routine, comfort and unconditional love. Loving them deeply also means walking the bittersweet journey of letting them go when they move on to their forever families, a privilege we never take lightly. We are supported by an extraordinary team of carers who pour their hearts into each child, offering not just care, but attachment, patience and love every single day. Community is at the core of who we are. We believe it takes a village to raise a child, and we actively welcome community involvement in our home, whether through time, support, skills or shared moments of connection. Our children are surrounded by people who choose to show up, and that love matters. At The Baby Home, we live by the words of Mother Teresa: “Not all of us can do great things, but we can do small things with great love.” Everything we do flows from that belief.
