About
The South African Depression and Anxiety Group (SADAG) is South Africa’s leading Mental Health NGO and a vital support service for individuals and communities across the country. For over three decades, SADAG has worked tirelessly to ensure that every person, regardless of background, income, or location, has access to free, compassionate Mental Health support. From moments of deep personal crisis to long-term emotional challenges, SADAG stands beside millions of South Africans who would otherwise have nowhere to turn.
At the heart of SADAG’s work is its network of national toll-free helplines, including South Africa’s only dedicated Suicide Crisis Line. These helplines operate 24 hours every day of the year and serve as a critical first point of contact for people facing depression, anxiety, trauma, suicidal thoughts, substance abuse challenges and more. Trained counsellors provide immediate support, crisis intervention, counselling, and referrals, offering reassurance and guidance when it matters most. SADAG also extends its reach into communities through Support Groups, online youth programmes, and dedicated counselling containers that bring Mental Health services directly into underserved and rural areas.
Beyond crisis support, SADAG is deeply committed to education and advocacy. The organisation runs nationwide awareness campaigns, school programmes, corporate wellness sessions, and community outreach initiatives to breakdown stigma and improve Mental Health literacy. It produces and distributes easy to understand, reliable information to empower individuals, families, teachers, and caregivers with the knowledge they need to recognise symptoms and seek support early. Through partnerships with government departments, healthcare organisations, corporates, and NGOs, SADAG continues to influence policy and strengthen the broader Mental Health system in South Africa.
Supporting SADAG means investing in hope, dignity and accessible care. Every contribution helps maintain essential helplines, expand outreach into under-resourced communities, train more counsellors and volunteers, and deliver ongoing education that breaks stigma and builds resilience. For countless South Africans navigating mental-health challenges, SADAG is not just an organisation it is a safe space and a beacon reminding them that help is always within reach.
