Established in 1982 in Soweto, PROTEC (Programme for Technological Careers) is a leading South African non-profit organisation dedicated to empowering disadvantaged youth through STEM education and career support. For over 40 years, the organisation has addressed critical skill shortages by helping students transition from school into successful careers in engineering, science, and technology.

Core Mission and Vision

PROTEC's mission is to develop the mathematics and science competence of young people, specifically targeting those from underserved communities. Their vision is to be a premier service provider in the STEM sector, building a technologically skilled workforce that can tackle South Africa’s unique challenges.

Key Educational Programmes

The organisation uses a holistic "Learner Excellence" model that spans up to 10 years, covering high school, tertiary education, and the initial years of employment:
  • High School Phase (Grades 8–12): Provides Saturday and vacation classes focusing on Mathematics, Physical Sciences, English, and "World of Work" life skills (leadership and career development).
  • Post-School Support: Offers mentorship and bridging programmes to help students successfully navigate tertiary education and reduce first-year dropout rates.
  • Teacher Development: Empowers educators in feeder schools with innovative methodologies and resources to improve the overall quality of STEM teaching.

Impact and Achievements

  • Vast Alumni Network: Since its inception, over 40,000 students have participated in PROTEC programmes, many becoming qualified engineers, doctors, and scientists.
  • Academic Excellence: PROTEC consistently achieves exceptional results, often maintaining a 100% matric pass rate with high percentages of bachelor's degree eligibility.
  • Industry Recognition: It has been named the Best NPO in Education at the Corporate Livewire South Africa Prestige Awards and remains a top-voted NPO for development impact.
Through strategic partnerships with corporate donors (CSI) and a national network of branches, PROTEC continues to "build pathways to possibility," ensuring that financial barriers do not prevent talented students from engineering the future.
