The Helderberg Baby Saver: A Lifeline for Newborns
Established in 2014, the Helderberg Baby Saver was created in response to a distressing incident where a newborn was abandoned but survived thanks to the prompt actions of the person who found her. Their quick response facilitated medical intervention and a safe placement, granting the baby the right to life and the chance to thrive in a secure, joyful, and nurturing environment.
Understanding Crisis Pregnancy Situations
Various factors can contribute to a crisis pregnancy. Common scenarios include:
- A woman abandoned by her partner, approaching childbirth without physical or financial support.
- A victim of rape who discovers her pregnancy after the safe abortion window has passed, leading her to reject the idea of motherhood.
- A young girl still in school facing familial threats to terminate her pregnancy or risk being disowned.
- A foreign woman denied care at local hospitals or clinics, or pressured by a social worker, influenced by cultural biases, to keep the baby despite her inability to provide for it.
The Helderberg Baby Saver Process
When a baby is placed in the Helderberg Baby Saver, an alarm is activated, alerting a volunteer response team through the partnered security company. The response includes:
- Dispatch of a security vehicle and ambulance, alongside volunteer team members.
- Adherence to strict protocols, allowing medical professionals to assess the baby for signs of life, injuries, or abnormalities.
- Notification of a social worker at the local partner hospital, with the baby transported to receive further examination and care until a temporary safe care parent is found through the partnered child protection organisation.
The volunteer will notify the police within 24 hours, filing an incident report along with an affidavit, and obtaining an accident report number. This certified affidavit is then provided to the child protection organisation. The organisation will advertise for three months to locate the baby's parents. If found, counseling is offered to help reunite them. Should the parents remain untraceable or decide against keeping the baby, the child will be cared for by appointed temporary safe care parents until adopted.
Strong Partnerships for Effective Solutions
This process thrives due to robust partnerships with Securite Security, GB Sec Ambulance Services, Helderberg Hospital, and Wandisa Child Protection Organisation. The collaboration is highly effective, thanks to the rigorous protocols in place. Since its inception, the Helderberg Baby Saver has facilitated 16 safe relinquishments, ensuring that each baby is reported to the designated Child Protection Organisation for secure placements and the right to life, rather than facing a tragic fate.
We applaud every mother who has chosen to utilize the Helderberg Baby Saver. By doing so, she has prioritized her baby's safety, and we are profoundly grateful to have this invaluable resource within our community.
