Distance For Difference (D4D)
Introduction
Distance For Difference (D4D) is a South African non-profit organisation that mobilises the power of sport to change children’s lives. Since 2005, D4D has raised over R14 million for vulnerable children by rallying athletes and communities to fundraise through endurance events, running, cycling, swimming, and hiking. Guided by the belief “Children in need – our passion in deeds,” D4D keep their operational cost very low and directs between 85 and 90% of its revenue straight to children’s charities, mainly in the Helderberg area in the Western Cape but also across South Africa.

Distance For Difference (D4D) is a registered Section 21 company and non-profit organisation (NPO 182-816) dedicated to empowering children in need across South Africa. Established in 2005, D4D was founded on a simple but powerful idea: harnessing the passion and determination of athletes to create lasting change in the lives of vulnerable children.
Through creative fundraising initiatives, D4D mobilises individuals and communities to turn every kilometre into hope. Athletes and supporters raise sponsorships through year-long challenges or during iconic endurance events like the Ironman, Cape Town Cycle Tour, and the Comrades Marathon. In addition, D4D hosts four signature platforms that bring people together for a shared purpose:
- The GRATITUDE Run – a trail run and family event
- THE500 – a 24-hour cycling, spinning and zwifting challenge
- Swim 4 HOPE – an ongoing swimming-based fundraising platform
- HIKE with PURPOSE – guided mountain hikes
With audited finances, a transparent open-book policy, and a passionate volunteer base, D4D remains committed to its vision: envisioning a world where every child thrives, powered by communities united through sport to foster health, education, and well-being.

Current Needs / Wish List
At Distance For Difference (D4D), we are passionate about ensuring that as much as possible of what we raise goes directly to children’s charities. To do this, we rely on the generosity of individuals, businesses, and communities who share our vision. Our current needs include:
- Financial Support – Direct donations to sustain and expand our support to our network of children’s charities across South Africa.
- Title Sponsors – Strategic partners for our two flagship fundraising events:
- THE500 (24-hour Cycling & Spinning Challenge)
- The GRATITUDE Run (trail and family fun run)
- Event Sponsors – Funding or in-kind contributions to cover event costs (e.g., logistics, hydration, equipment, and venue support) so that more money can go directly to beneficiaries.
- Volunteers – Passionate individuals to help with planning, logistics, and on-the-day execution of our fundraising events.
- Event Participants – Runners, cyclists, swimmers, and hikers who can fundraise or take part in our unique platforms.
- International Donor Access – Connections to overseas donors and networks who would like to support vulnerable children in South Africa.
