About Tutuse Community Project
Tutuse Community Project is a grassroots, community-based organisation founded by King Sambu and based in deep rural areas around Lady Frere, Eastern Cape. The organisation was established in response to the persistent socio-economic challenges faced by rural communities, particularly poverty, unemployment, lack of access to education resources, food insecurity, and limited support for elderly persons and people living with disabilities.
Tutuse Community Project works to restore dignity, improve access to opportunities, and strengthen community resilience through practical, impact-driven programmes. Our core focus areas include education support, youth development, nutrition, digital inclusion, and care for the elderly and people with disabilities.
One of our flagship interventions is the Back-to-School Campaign, which supports hundreds of learners each year with essential items such as school shoes, uniforms, stationery, sanitary towels, and learner care packs. This initiative aims to reduce school absenteeism, improve learner confidence, and create an enabling environment for academic success, particularly for children from vulnerable households.
In addition to education-focused programmes, Tutuse Community Project implements nutrition and feeding initiatives, including school feeding support, food hampers, and community meal programmes, recognising the critical link between nutrition, concentration, and learning outcomes. The organisation also runs Mandela Day initiatives, Christmas feeding programmes, and dignity drives targeting elderly persons and people living with disabilities in rural villages.
Tutuse Community Project actively collaborates with schools, community leaders, local government structures, clinics, civil society organisations, and corporate partners to maximise impact and ensure sustainable delivery. Our work has received recognition and coverage from community radio stations and local newspapers, helping to amplify rural voices and highlight the realities faced by underserved communities.
Guided by principles of accountability, inclusivity, and community ownership, Tutuse Community Project remains committed to creating long-term, meaningful change by addressing both immediate needs and systemic barriers. Through partnerships and collective action, we strive to build stronger, healthier, and more resilient rural communities in the Eastern Cape.
