Taking Care of Business (TCB)

TCB is a nonprofit social enterprise. We empower unemployed South Africans and their families to escape the cycle of poverty through small business opportunities, mostly within the circular economy.

The unemployment and poverty crisis in South Africa is massive. We know that quality education and entrepreneurship (self-employment) are practical pathways to financial and social independence. TCB believes that with the right support structure and opportunity anyone can become self-employed. That’s why we provide a holistic solution that works with the whole person (head, heart and hands). We equip and support people on their journey with viable business opportunities, access to the economy, resources and capital, training, practical work experience, mentorship and coaching, and deep personal growth. The result? Active, contributing citizens that become role models for others.

We can deliver this holistic model thanks to win-win collaborations with like-minded organisations and South Africa's major retailers who donate their excess stock which helps prevent merchandise from going to landfill.

Our programmes

Resell: We equip unemployed mothers to become successful clothing traders during this 2-year Enterprise Development programme. Their businesses are fuelled by donations of excess clothing and merchandise from the retail and manufacturing sector, which reduces fashion waste.

Repair: We equip unemployed South Africans (mainly men) to join this 2-year training programme. They learn how to run appliance repair and trading businesses. Damaged, broken and excess stock is donated by retail partners and the public. It is then repaired and sold to reduce e-waste.

Remake: We equip seamstresses to run financially viable micro-manufacturing businesses. Donations of fabric, cut samples, and haberdashery from supply chain partners support this circular economy programme.

Reskill: We offer our life-changing skills training workshops to other organisations (corporate and nonprofit) to improve the lives of their participants and staff. Modules cover occupational intelligence, financial freedom, computer literacy, entrepreneurial, financial, business and life-skills.

Sponsor a father Empower a father to build a better future for his family through our Repair Programme. Your donation provides essential training in repair and business skills, enabling fathers to gain steady employment or start their own repair businesses. Sponsor a mother Your donation can change the life of a mother striving to lift her family out of poverty. By sponsoring a mother in our Resell Programme, you equip her with the skills and resources needed to start her own business reselling second-hand goods. Sponsor professional sewing equipment to train seamstresses Give a seamstress access to the tools she needs to succeed. Our Remake Programme teaches women how to create beautiful, marketable garments from repurposed materials, contributing to the circular economy. Your donation will provide vital equipment, such as industrial sewing machines and overlockers, which we use to train seamstresses and give them access to practical learning.
