About HAART
HAART (Helping Animals And Rural Townships) is a registered non-profit organisation based in Phalaborwa, South Africa, founded by Sam Keegan. HAART was born from witnessing the deep connection between people and their animals in rural communities — and the heartbreaking reality that poverty often makes proper care impossible and lack of education in caring for animals is almost non-existent. If we can teach and support people to improve the lives of the animals around people in rural villages, develop love and compassion, then we have a better chance of extending that love, appreciation and respect to the wildlife that so many villages are surrounded by. Animal Care & Conservation go hand in hand to build a better future.
Our Mission
Our mission is to improve animal welfare while empowering communities with the knowledge, resources, and support needed to care responsibly for their animals. We believe lasting change happens when we uplift both animals and the people who love them. Recruiting volunteer Animal Warriors, creating a tribe, allows what we do to have an everlasting impact.
Our Story
What began as one person responding to urgent calls for help has grown into a community-driven organisation serving areas such as Mbaula and Phalaubeni rural villages, bordering Kruger National Park. In places where veterinary services are limited and families struggle to meet basic needs, animals often suffer silently. HAART steps in with compassion and practical action — providing free essential and emergency veterinary care, consistent Outreach Health Clinics for animals, education in schools on animal care and conservation, and direct community support.
Alongside our animal welfare work, we run a weekly feeding programme providing nutritious meals to registered underprivileged children, and we distribute donated food, clothing, and essential supplies to families in crisis.
The HAART Centre has developed to provide a safe haven for sick, injured, abused, and abandoned animals — offering treatment, rehabilitation, and when possible, loving new homes. For others, HAART is a lifetime Sanctuary for unadoptable dogs to donkeys and orphaned farm animals. A Place of Love and Hope.
Our Vision
We envision rural communities where animals are cared for with dignity, children grow up understanding compassion and responsibility, and no animal suffers simply because help was out of reach. Our long-term goal is sustainable community development rooted in education, empowerment, and kindness. Creating more Animal Protectors, Wildlife Rangers, Vets and Conservationists for the future.
Our Impact
Through Outreach Health Clinics, sterilisation drives, emergency rescues, school education programmes, and feeding initiatives, HAART directly improves the lives of hundreds of animals and families each year. Every treated wound, every vaccinated dog, every sterilised dog, every educated child, and every warm meal served represents hope restored and a brighter future for so many.
Why We Need Your Support
The need is constant, and resources are limited. Veterinary supplies, animal feed, fuel for outreach, school materials, and children’s meals all rely on donations from kind and compassionate people. Without funding, we cannot respond to emergencies, continue sterilisation efforts, or keep our feeding programme running. Spaying and Neutering dogs is the single most impactful way of directly reducing suffering and over population, but to do this on the scale we dream of requires veterinary funding. Every broken leg, every snake bite, scorpion sting or car accident costs and we never want to have to say NO because of funding!
We are also in urgent need of dedicated volunteers — from animal care assistants and outreach helpers to administrative and fundraising support. Every helping hand allows us to reach further into communities that depend on us. No experience is required, all training is given, and our dedicated volunteer programme provides accommodation and all meals for a minimum donation for both local and international volunteers, as well as internships for those studying a variety of subjects.
By supporting HAART, you are not only saving animals — you are strengthening families, educating children, and building a more compassionate future.
Together we are stronger, we can be the help that so many are still waiting for.
