About
Creative Crafts and Catering is a safe haven in Alberton for young adults with intellectual disabilities. We empower young adults aged 16 years and older to be productive with a view to generate an income outside the ordinary employment options, which are not available to persons with severe intellectual challenges. Young adults and school leavers with severe intellectual and limited abilities are not capable of working independently. As a result, most typical employment opportunities are not viable.
Our vision is to equip young adults with intellectual difficulties with skills relevant to each individual person's skills, thus enabling them to be productive with a view to sell their own products.
In terms of our program each participant names his or her own business. They are then referred to as the CEO of their respective businesses. They are taught painting and related skills. Wooden or craft items are provided to our CEO's which they paint and prepare for sale. These items are sold at markets or on order.
The result of our program is that our CEO's grow in confidence and self-worth. They feel valued and important since they now also work and earn an income like the rest of their families. All our CEO's communication and interpersonal skills improve after joining our program.
It is important to expose the general public to our team and vice versa, to learn how to interact with each other. Similarly, the fitness and health of our CEO's are important to us. To achieve these goals, we have extra mural activities, like lawn bowling. Our team is enrolled at the Brackenhurst Bowling club, where they receive bowling lessons.
Our program was established by Adrie Oosthuizen in 2020. Adrie has been active in the Craft Industry for more than 20 years.
