CHESHIRE HOME SUMMERSTRAND
NPO 008-314

Our Mission is to assist people with disabilities in the Nelson Mandela Metro and further afield. We achieve this through providing the conditions necessary for their physical, mental and spiritual well-being.
We believe that each person, whatever his/her disability, is a uniquely valuable individual and that people with disabilities should have the personal freedom to pursue their aspirations and take their own place in the wider community of society.
Our aim is to offer to those with disabilities:
- unquestioning recognition of their full human rights
- standards of excellence in all aspects of care from both staff and volunteers
- the support of a forward-looking and responsive organization, aware of their needs and those of their care givers
- the opportunity to take an effective part at every level in running our services
- partnership in a continuing endeavor to help others, wherever the need may be, in the field of disability.
Situated in Summerstrand Port Elizabeth this Home has been proudly serving the needs of profoundly physically disabled adults since 1975 – a total of 47 years. We are a residential Home that accommodates 56 residents, most of whom rely on wheelchairs and other equipment for mobility.
The emphasis is on the word “home” and Summerstrand is a home in the true sense of the word. We strive to provide excellent care, support and opportunity for each resident through the provision of independent assisted living facilities, through the creation of leadership and skills development opportunity, the provision of spiritual and social opportunity, and through the encouragement of employment and small business opportunities.
Our aim is to re-establish, where possible, the placement of the residents in the mainstream of society. Dignity and self-esteem are what we seek for each resident. We give our residents as much responsibility as possible. The residents are often reminded that they cannot demand respect from the community, they need to interact with the community and earn respect.
We are also involved in support of disability in the wider local community, always ready to share our expertise and service to all with disability.
Our residents come from all walks of life. Their disabilities result from several causes: injury due to car and motor bike accidents; injury from rugby accidents or diving accidents; impairment from birth; degenerative diseases; illness; assault and strokes.
Unfortunately, but true, is the fact that disability is often associated with poverty. Most of our residents rely on a Social Disability Pension which is not sufficient to meet their needs. Despite a small subsidy we have to fund raise some R 250 000 per month. For this reason, we rely on the generosity of donors and friends, through fundraising and donations.
Volunteerism and support, through funding and gifts in kind, are essential needs of the Home and we welcome all volunteers and donors with open arms. Gifts in Kind such as donations eg for our charity shops or use in the Home are also most welcome eg clothing, food, ornaments, toys, books etc
Our expertise in care of disabled persons led us to establish an “inclusive developmental and educare Centre” for disabled children in a poorer area of the Nelson Mandela Metro. This Centre, known as “Khaya Cheshire”, serves the Walmer Township area. Khaya Cheshire, newly built at Cheshire Home in Summerstrand, has had a positive impact on the lives of these often-forgotten children of our society. We have managed to reintegrate children into mainstream education. Khaya Cheshire has been in operation since 2001 but had to relocate from Walmer Township to the current premises – the Forever Home. Support to the destitute families is also offered through the provision of monthly food parcels.
Accountability
We place a high emphasis on accountable management. We have both a Board of Management and a Finance Committee to provide overseeing management needs and expertise. We have worked exceptionally hard at becoming sustainable to ensure our role for the next 50 years! We see ourselves as a business in the field of disability. We market ourselves through the high quality of service we offer disabled persons and do our best to ensure we are transparent and effective. We always have a full Home with a long waiting list of applicants.
We also have MOUs with training facilities such as Nightingale Trust and NMU for the provision of experiential training to students. These two companies would allow us to use them as a reference.
As an outgoing organization we recognize the need for ourselves to be proactive – we don’t just rely on donations, but we organize events eg an annual fete, fund raising dinners, monthly luncheon for 100 persons from the community, participation in casual day, golf days etc. Likewise, through volunteers and residents we run three successful charity shops – “Clothes Galore” and “Wot Not” shop (sells ornaments, furniture items, books, clothing etc.) and a Book Shop. We have grown these shops in the last 5 years to be viable and essential funders for the Home. In addition, the gifts in kind we receive allows us to add to the Home for residents benefit and our support of other NPO’s – we at Cheshire Home Summerstrand must also know how to give, not just receive!
Our thoughts are often summed up by the saying:
“We make a living by what we get. We make a life by what we give”
