The
Animal Welfare Society Stellenbosch (AWSS) was founded in 1956 in Devon Valley, Stellenbosch with the donation of a van and the support of the Stellenbosch Animal Hospital. Our work is grounded in the belief that every animal deserves compassion and a good quality of life. This mission is achieved through expert veterinary care, our Inspectorate (enforcing the law and responding to reports of cruelty and neglect), humane education, running a Kennel, Cattery, and a successful Adoption programme, which every year places hundreds of animals in caring and loving homes.
The AWSS serves the community of Stellenbosch and the surrounding areas by taking care of the community's unwanted, mistreated and neglected pets. We actively promote responsible pet ownership with a strong emphasis on the sterilisation of cats and dogs as a humane and effective way to address the challenges of overpopulated pet communities. In addition, we dip, vaccinate, deworm and treat illnesses of animals. Our on-site clinic undertakes vaccinations, sterilisations and surgeries for pets of owners who are in the lower income bracket, providing animals with vital treatments that they may otherwise not have access to.
The AWSS premises on the Devon Valley Road, is cheerful and one of hope. Our dogs reside in spacious camps with plenty of grass on which to play together, and cosy, homely living spaces for the cats in our Cattery.
Volunteers are welcome between 10am and 3pm daily, to play with the kittens, cats and puppies, and walk our dogs in the surrounding vineyards.
We are always looking for homes in which our cats and dogs can be fostered, easing the stresses of shelter life, and better preparing them for their loving, forever future homes.
All monetary donations are eligible for a section 18A tax certificate.
The Animal Welfare Society Stellenbosch is a registered nonprofit organisation and Public Benefit Organisation that is autonomous and independent, with a focus on the welfare of animals. AWSS is member-based, independent of government and industry.
