Dear Sweetheart Volunteer!
We believe that every South African deserves the freedom that comes with a wheelchair, and we’re working hard to ensure that no one is left behind.
Since our launch on Valentine’s Day in 2013, we’ve proudly provided 547 bespoke wheelchairs to individuals across South Africa.
By recycling items like bread tags, plastic bottle tops, aluminium can tabs, and takeaway coffee cup lids, we turn everyday waste into something extraordinary – mobility for those in need.
How to Get Involved:
- Collect Plastic bottle tops collect bottle tops with a #2, #5, #7 resin (look for the recycling number)
- Collect bread tags
- Collect aluminium can tabs
- Collect take away coffee cup closures
- Make sure all items are clean and dry.
- Separate your tops, tags, lids and tabs before recycling, as they go to different partners.
- Drop your tops, tags, lids and tabs at over 100 collection points nationwide. You can locate your nearest collection point on our Collection Point Map.
A standard wheelchair costs 1750 kg of bottle tops, 350 kg of bread tags, 350kg take away coffee cup lids or 295kg aluminium can tabs.
How It Works:
The Sweethearts Foundation receives plastic bottle tops and bread tags from individuals, schools, and organizations nationwide. These are recycled by local companies, and the proceeds fund custom-made wheelchairs for people on our waiting list.
🔹 We do not exchange tops or tags directly for wheelchairs. Instead, anyone in need should be added to our waiting list via our
website FAQ.
🔹 Please ensure all tops, tags, lids and tabs are separated and no other foreign bits are mixed with your collection.
Your support helps change lives, one top at a time!
Yours in Wheels,
The Sweethearts Team
