Pharos Community Centre

Guiding, Caring and Empowering Communities

Our Story

Pharos Community Centre is a non-profit organisation based in Garsfontein, Pretoria, South Africa. We are dedicated to supporting individuals and families in need by providing practical assistance, creating opportunities for personal growth and helping people build a better future. We believe that every person deserves to be treated with dignity, compassion and respect, regardless of their race, religion, culture or circumstances. Our work is rooted in the belief that meaningful change happens when a community comes together to care for one another, share resources and empower people to become more independent. At Pharos, we look beyond immediate needs. While food and clothing distribution is an important part of our work, we also strive to address the challenges that prevent individuals and families from reaching their full potential. Through our various community programs, we aim to restore hope, strengthen families, develop skills and create opportunities for a more sustainable future. Our journey is made possible through the generosity of donors, volunteers, businesses, community partners and individuals who share our vision of a caring and empowered community.

Our Mission

Our mission is to serve, support and empower individuals and families in need by providing essential resources, developing practical life skills and creating opportunities for growth where everyone has the opportunity to live with dignity and hope. We are committed to addressing immediate needs while encouraging long-term self-reliance, personal development and community participation.

Our Vision

We envision a community where individuals and families have access to the resources, support and opportunities they need to overcome hardship, discover their potential and build a more secure and sustainable future. We strive to be a place of hope, compassion and empowerment where people are supported not only in times of crisis but also on their journey towards independence.

Our Community Programmes

1. Food Parcel Programme

Food insecurity remains one of the greatest challenges facing vulnerable households. Through our monthly Food Parcel Programme, Pharos supports approximately 25–27 families, reaching around 57 individuals each month. Food parcels provide essential groceries to families experiencing financial hardship and help ease the burden of putting food on the table. Our volunteers assist with sorting and packing donated groceries to ensure that available resources reach those who need them most. We also provide food parcels to between 50 - 70 unemployed and homeless men who participate in our weekly Life Skills Programme. We rely on regular donations of non-perishable food, groceries and financial support to sustain and grow this vital initiative.

2. Clothing Ministry

Our Clothing Ministry collects, sorts and distributes donated clothing to individuals and families who cannot afford essential items. Clothing is distributed according to identified needs, helping recipients maintain dignity and access appropriate clothing for everyday life. Through our network of community contacts and outreach partners, we also extend clothing assistance to other organisations and vulnerable groups.

3. Life Skills Programme

Our Life Skills Programme takes place every Thursday at 09:00 and provides support to homeless and unemployed men who are working towards improving their circumstances. The programme offers a welcoming environment where participants can receive encouragement, engage in uplifting discussions, develop practical life skills and find renewed motivation to move forward. Food parcels and clothing are also distributed as part of this outreach initiative, addressing immediate needs while encouraging personal growth and hope.

4. Job Seekers Forum

Finding employment can be challenging, particularly for individuals who lack access to guidance, resources or professional support. Our Job Seekers Forum assists people with their employment journey by offering support with CV preparation, job-search strategies and interview preparation. We aim to equip job seekers with the confidence and practical tools they need to pursue employment opportunities and work towards financial independence.

5. Community Business Initiative

Pharos recognises the importance of entrepreneurship and small business development in creating sustainable livelihoods. Through our Community Business Initiative, we support individuals who want to establish or develop their own businesses. The programme encourages entrepreneurship, shares practical knowledge and helps participants explore ways to turn their ideas and skills into potential sources of income. Our goal is to promote self-reliance, encourage initiative and contribute to economic opportunities within the community.

6. CHICS Educational Outreach Programme

Through our educational outreach initiatives, including CHICS at Bright Beginnings Day Care and Preschool in Mamelodi, Pharos supports children's learning and development. The programme focuses on providing educational resources, learning materials, toys and games that encourage creativity, exploration and early childhood development. We welcome donations of age-appropriate educational toys, puzzles, building blocks, books, stationery and other learning resources to help create enriching learning experiences for young children.

7. Annual Stationery Project

Education can open doors to opportunity, but many children begin the school year without all the stationery and learning materials they need. Our annual Stationery Project aims to assist learners from financially disadvantaged backgrounds by collecting and distributing essential school supplies. In previous initiatives, support has reached 42 learners from Laerskool Garsfontein and 122 learners supported through CMR who are in foster care. Through donations of stationery and educational materials, we aim to help children start the school year better equipped to learn, participate and succeed.

8. Therapeutic Services

Pharos Community Centre provides emotional support and counselling services to individuals, couples and families facing trauma, addiction, marriage difficulties and family challenges. We offer a compassionate, supportive environment where people can seek guidance, strengthen relationships, work through personal challenges and find hope on their journey towards healing and restoration.

9. Seasonal and Community Outreach Initiatives

Throughout the year, Pharos undertakes additional initiatives to respond to community needs. These include our annual Christmas Food Hamper Drive, which aims to provide families in need with additional groceries during the festive season, as well as outreach efforts to support vulnerable and homeless individuals. Our seasonal initiatives depend on the generosity of individuals, businesses, schools, organisations and community members who are willing to share what they have with those who need it most.

Our Values

Compassion: We approach every person with kindness, understanding and respect. Dignity: We believe that everyone deserves to be treated with respect and given the opportunity to live a meaningful life. Empowerment: We aim to equip individuals with the skills, resources and confidence to improve their circumstances. Inclusivity: We welcome and support people from all races, religions and cultures. Community: We believe that lasting change is achieved through collaboration, generosity and shared responsibility. Hope: We remain committed to creating opportunities and helping people see possibilities beyond their current circumstances.

Our Impact

Every food parcel distributed, every item of clothing shared, every child supported with educational resources and every person encouraged to pursue a better future represents an opportunity to make a meaningful difference. Our work is not measured only by the resources we distribute, but also by the dignity we help restore, the relationships we build and the opportunities we help create. We recognise that community challenges cannot be addressed by one organisation alone. Sustainable impact requires partnerships, consistent support and people who are willing to contribute their time, resources, skills and experience.
