The Society for Animals in Distress (SAID) is South Africa’s largest animal welfare hospital and one of the country’s most comprehensive and impactful animal welfare organisations. For close to seven decades, SAID has provided critical veterinary services to animals living at the harsh edge of poverty — where access to care is limited, and the need is urgent.
Operating without any government funding, SAID runs a fully equipped animal welfare hospital supported by an income-tiered fee structure. This ensures that veterinary care remains accessible to all, regardless of financial circumstance. For many families, SAID is the only place where help is possible — where compassion shouldn't be denied because of cost.
Beyond the hospital, SAID’s mobile clinics travel into under-served and impoverished communities, delivering primary veterinary care, sterilisation, and treatment directly to those who cannot reach traditional facilities. These clinics are often a lifeline, addressing suffering before it becomes fatal and supporting communities where animals are essential companions, protectors, and sources of livelihood.
SAID is also deeply committed to working animals, particularly horses and donkeys used in coal yards and informal labour. These animals endure some of the most demanding conditions, and SAID provides dedicated equine and farm animal care, rehabilitation, and welfare monitoring.
Collaboration lies at the heart of SAID’s approach. The organisation partners with other non-profit organisations, shelters, and Universities offering animal related qualifications to assist mainly with sterilisation, veterinary treatment, and outreach strengthening the broader animal welfare network and improving outcomes across the sector.
Every animal treated at SAID represents more than a medical case — they represent a life valued, suffering prevented, and a belief that compassion should never be a privilege. Through its hospital services, mobile outreach, equine welfare work, and collaborative partnerships, Animals in Distress continues to set the standard for ethical, accessible, and impactful animal welfare in South Africa.
