Vulpro is a leading non-profit organisation dedicated to the conservation of African vultures. Our mission is to protect these vital scavengers through collaboration, innovation, and science-based conservation, ensuring sustainable populations that continue to fulfil their essential ecological role.
Founded as a vulture rehabilitation centre, Vulpro recognises the immense value of every individual bird in securing species survival. We provide specialised care for injured, poisoned, and displaced vultures, supporting their recovery and safe return to the wild. Rehabilitation efforts are closely linked to scientific research, with released vultures tracked to monitor survival, movement patterns, and habitat use.
For vultures that cannot be released, Vulpro operates a pioneering captive-breeding programme. Non-releasable birds contribute genetically through their offspring, which are released into the wild to strengthen declining populations. This programme plays a critical role in supplementing wild populations and supporting long-term species recovery.
Vulpro’s work is underpinned by research and monitoring, including population surveys, tracking, and data analysis, which inform conservation strategies and policy development across Southern Africa. Beyond direct conservation action, Vulpro actively engages communities, landowners, industries, and government stakeholders to raise awareness of vultures’ ecological importance, implement mitigation measures, and advocate for supportive conservation policies.
These integrated efforts have resulted in a 75 per cent post-release survival rate among rehabilitated vultures, demonstrating measurable impact in securing the future of these critical species.<
Our Conservation Approach
- Rehabilitation and Release: Providing specialised care for injured, poisoned, and displaced vultures to ensure recovery and safe release.
- Captive Breeding and Reintroduction: Breeding non-releasable vultures and releasing their offspring to bolster wild populations.
- Research and Monitoring: Tracking vulture movements, monitoring populations, and analysing data to guide effective conservation action.
- Education and Awareness: Engaging communities, schools, and industries to promote behavioural change that supports vulture conservation.
- Collaboration and Advocacy: Working with stakeholders to mitigate threats and implement practical conservation solutions.
